Roleplaying Rules

The following rules should be followed at all times. This includes while writing student and staff applications. All applications that do not meet these standards will be summarily disregarded. If you still have questions that still need to be answered after you are done reading these rules, please read our FAQ or ask your question on our OOC board.

  1. Do not use names from the Harry Potter series.

BAD: Ginny Potter played Gobstones with her friend, Draco Lestrange.
GOOD: Annabelle Haney decided to go to the Rec Centre with her friend, Paul Eagle.

  3. Please keep character features (hair, eye colour, height, abilities, behaviours) to a realistic and normal level unless you first consult the Headmaster. TO CLARIFY: Eyes do not change colour in response to emotions, pink is not a natural hair colour, and not every character is a Parselmouth or Legilimens. Additionally, bear in mind that 11 year old girls have an average height of 4'5", while 11 year old boys have an average height of around 4'7".

BAD: Cosette Embers, who was a fourth year and 6'6", talked to Professor Phale's snake in Parseltongue as her eyes glowed red.
GOOD: Cosette Embers's blue-green eyes glinted mischievously as pretended to speak Parseltongue to Professor Phale's snake, hoping to   freak out her classmates.

  4. All in-character posts (which means all posts on all boards (and applications!) except the OOC board) should be a minimum of ten sentences long. This better enables you to explore your character's unique and distinctive personality while also helping your fellow authors do the same by giving them more substance to work with when responding to your posts.

  5. ~*~

  6. All posts should be in past-tense, third-person.

BAD: I am going to go talk to Garen after I finish lunch.
GOOD: Perhaps, Headmaster Guido decided, he would go talk to Professor Tennant after lunch.

  8. Please keep post content to a PG level. For more information, please read our PG Guidelines.

BAD: "What the *&^%# do you think you're doing??" yelled Professor Phale as he stabbed the offending student with a pair of pruning shears.
GOOD: "What do you think you're doing?" admonished Professor Phale as he confiscated the offending student's wand.

  9. Be aware that Muggle appliances do not work inside RMI, and that every character action has a consequence, and write accordingly!

BAD: Rob Jacobs listened to his iPod as he typed a paper on his laptop and threw raw eggs at Professor Thompson.
GOOD: Rob Jacobs wrote his essay using a Self-Inking quill, trying his hardest to look innocent as Professor Thompson looked about to determine who had let off a dungbomb in the classroom.

  10. ~*~

  11. Do not write for other peoples' characters without their permission.

BAD: Joanna Dresden held her cane out in front of Simon Gallup, then laughed at him when he tripped.
GOOD: Joanna Dresden held her cane out in front of Simon Gallup when he walked past, hoping that he would trip..

  12. ~*~

  13. Start your own adventure, don't wait for someone else to!

BAD: Alissa Kendrick sat in a chair. She was bored.
GOOD: Alissa Kendrick was bored, so she decided to 'borrow' a Snitch from Coach St. Valentine to practise her Seeking. What she didn't expect was for it to escape. "Look out!" the redhead yelled as she threw herself across the person sitting on a couch, trying to catch the elusive winged ball.
